Description

This northwest Persian Heriz carpet dates to around 1900.

The central medallion on a dark blue ground is so small it appears to be part of an all over design. This field design of plant patterns is arranged around four light blue vertical lines, two in the top and two in the bottom half of the carpet and placed either side of an imaginary central vertical, which has one larger floral pattern each at the top and the bottom ends of the carpet. These connect to the central medallion due to their size and the dark blue ground colour.  A number of shorter vertical lines which function as plant stems are in the same light blue colour as the main lines further to the sides of the carpet. The visual effect of these vertical lines is that they make the carpet appear narrower than it actually is.

The meandering border on a dark blue ground picks up the patterns as well as the colours of the field.

This is a classic decorative carpet in lovely soft colours, particularly the warm terracotta red of the field, and a sought after size of around 10’6”x 7′.

It is in excellent condition with a full wool pile woven on a cotton foundation.
