Description

China, 1st half 19th century. The centre medallion of this Chinese Ningxia carpet is formed by a large Shou character (for longevity), surrounded by a circle of cloud bands and bats (a symbol of happiness and joy) on an apricot ground. A beautifully drawn fretted dragon, often a symbol of power, strength and good luck, occupies each corner of the otherwise sparsely decorated field. A simple reciprocal key border is enclosed by a meandering lotus flower main border. This is a very impressive and rare  carpet. Wool on a cotton foundation. Very minor repairs, overall excellent condition.
