Description
Ningxia, mid 19th century. One Hundred Antiques carpets are rooted in the Confucian tradition stressing the respect for learning, the investigation of things and an interest in what was perceived as the golden past. This explains the presence of ritual objects such as the three-legged bronze vessel, musical instruments, attributes of scholarship such as books, the brush pot etc, and the references to qualities of a Confucian gentleman. A similar example is in the Thyssen-Bornemisza collection (see Franses, M. & R. Waterhouse, eds, Classical Chinese Carpets I, London 2000, pp.48/49) Wool on a cotton foundation. Minor reweaves and some repiling, old repair to top-end border
