Tekke Wedding Rug
Description
Tekke wedding rug, Turkmenistan, late 19th century, all wool.
Reputedly, the bride used to sit on one such small rug of squarish proportions during some of the wedding ceremonies. It appears that it was often the bride herself who made the wedding rug, and since she would have been very young, she would often not have been a very accomplished weaver yet, hence the ‘wonkiness’ on this example which clearly diminishes with the progress of the weaving.
An utterly charming piece
