Description

This Italian silk embroider dates to the early 1700s. The embroidery is worked on silk on a linen backing of the same, pale golden colour. The textile has been attached to a later cotton lining for stability.

The embroidery forms a wonderful display of flower heads and scrolling vines in the typical colour ways, which are  hues of gold, green, blue, peach and a soft dark red. (For an Italian silk embroidery in a very similar colour range on this website, see https://www.christopherleggeorientalcarpets.com/products/view/italian-silk-embroidery/). The silk ground is fragile in several places, but the embroidery itself is in good condition and the textile has retained its glorious elegance and great presence.

Possibly part of an ecclesiastical vestment, it still has its original edging, including around the openings at the top.

We would recommend framing this textile behind UV protected glass to preserve its integrity.
