Caucasian Shirvan
Description
This Caucasian Shirvan rug dates to the end of the 19th century.
The field on a mustard yellow ground is formed by a grid of slightly overlapping diamonds which are filled with one star each. Three substantial borders on a red, white and blue ground respectively are separated by two guard stripes in two coloured diagonal stripes of red and white and blue and yellow. All the motifs, including the flowers in the outer border on a light blue ground, are angular in character.
The rug is woven in wool on a wool foundation, with the original knotted ends still intact.
It is slightly low in some areas but is over all in good, usable condition
