Description
This rare skirt border of museum quality was made in Crete in the 18th century. The embroidery is worked in red silk on a ground material made of a mix of linen and cotton fibres. It is a complete piece in 5 loom widths and in excellent condition.
A very similar piece is published in Roderick Taylor’s Embroidery of the Greek Islands and Epirus. New York, Interlink Books, 1998, p.28, where he points out the Italian influences in the designs of the early examples, with the more ‘provincial’ addition of the birds
