Description

This Yomut Turkoman main carpet dates to the late 19th century, probably around 1880.

The field is an all over design of dyrnak guls, with the main border a variant of the curled leaf border on a white ground. Two minor borders with the so-called running dog design flank the main border. The two elems at the top and bottom ends are a stylized version of a tree design.

The carpet has a lovely range of colours which are all based on natural dye stuffs and are stronger than they often are in a Yomut: two shades of blue, a deep turquoise/ green, three shades of red, one almost orange yellow and white from undyed wool. It is in very good pile and has a heavy weight. The overcasting on the sides in alternating blocks of dark red and blue is original.

The carpet is woven in wool on a wool foundation and is in very good condition, an absolute classic.
