Description

This Arts and Crafts panel dates to around 1900.

It was designed in Britain, possibly as part of the Silver Studio in London, which was founded in 1880 by Arthur Silver and was very influential at the time. It is influenced by the designs of Charles Francis Annesley Voysey, if not actually designed by him, and marks a time when fabric designs moved away from the Victorian design language to simpler and bolder patterns.

The panel in hand is no exception: large flower heads, almost certainly tulips, are surrounded by elegantly swerving tendrils ending in four smaller flower heads. They are embedded in bold green swerving lines in the manner of highly stylised leaves which form a grid around the flowers in alternating concave and convex lines, thus forming a repeating pattern.

The colour scheme, too, is very simple: gold for the flowers and two shades of green for the leaf shapes are set on a rich plain red background.

The double sided panel (see additional image for the reverse colour scheme of the back) was woven on a Jaquard loom in very fine wool.

It is in excellent condition
