Description

This Tekke engsi dates to around the middle of the 19th century.

Woven by a member of one of the largest Turkoman tribes, it was used to cover the entrance to a yurt when special occasions called for such a decorative door cover and was on display during the wedding ceremonies.

The design follows the parameters of all Tekke engsis (see, for example, further descriptions on this website at  https://www.christopherleggeorientalcarpets.com/products/view/antique-tekke-engsi/). Unusually, the white in the plant patterns in the bottom border are made of cotton rather than undyed wool.

The example in hand has some damage, particularly to the sides, and is priced accordingly. It is still an honest representative of a tribal way of life from the past.
