Kashmir Window Hanging (Darparda)
Description
This Kashmir window hanging, or darparda, was made in Srinagar in the early 19th century.
Exquisitely worked in pashmina, it is a composite panel assembled from four different pieces which were most likely originally shawls, as was customary at the time: the field with an all over boteh design on a red ground, the yellow border strip, the blue border and the outer triple border. A strip of white/blue material was applied to the field to form a mihrab as found in prayer rugs, even though this textile is unlikely to have been used for this purpose.
The textile has been professionally conserved and mounted and is over all in very good condition.
It is a highly collectable and rare work of textile art and featured in our retrospective exhibition “50 Years – Along the Way”
