Antique Tekke Turkoman Rug
Description
This antique Tekke Turkoman rug dates to around 1900.
It has a classic field design of a grid of main guls (gul meaning flower in Turkic languages), in this case three columns of seven guls. These are in turn interspersed with a grid of secondary guls which are arranged along vertical lines. The main border and the elems at the top and bottom ends are also following the traditional design repertoire.
This is a ‘commercial’ rug made by a member of the Tekke tribe with a view to selling it rather than keeping it in the family grouping.
The rug still has its original kelim ends and is in excellent condition. The naturally dyed wool pile is woven onto a woolen foundation.
