Tashkent or Dshizak, Uzbekistan, mid 19th century. The unusual design of this Suzani mimics the appearance of a small piece laid on top of a larger one. The joining stitching appears to be by the same hand as that on the joins of the central panel. This arrangement has precedence: a similar piece is in the Burrell Collection, exhibited in their “Suzani Embroideries” exhibition in 2008 (Suzani 30.13, published in: Suzani Embroideries of the Burrell Collection, p.8, Culture and Sport Glasgow, Museums, 2008). Silk embroidery on linen, backed; excellent condition
