Antique Sultanabad Ornak
Description
This antique Sultanabad ornak dates to the late 19th century.
An ornak, or vagireh in Turkish, is a woven sampler to either function as a sample of a particular design or to show off the quality and range of a weaver’s skills. In the piece in hand, the former is the case.
This is a rare signed piece. The cartouches in the border segments make a reference to the workshop in which the complete carpet would have been made, and the area which is referred to as Arak, or aragh of Iran, a term used pre 1900.
It is in very good condition, with a few very minor repairs.
A collector’s piece
