Description

This Indian bead work wall hanging was made in Gujarat, probably in the middle of the 20th century.

At 43 x 44.5 cm, it is an almost perfect square of beads embroidered onto cotton. The surrounds are made of old strips of silk, the red and the golden being brocades incorporating metal thread. This is the same format as the one used on the textile published by Rosemary Crill (Indian Embroidery. V&A Publications 1999, plate 67, page 76).

The white ground is richly embroidered with pairs of human figures, birds and horses, with a row of small birds sitting on the lower border.

Red cotton was used as the backing for the textile.
