Description

Northwest Persian village rug from the Hamadan district, made in around 1940.  The central octagonal medallion is set on a dark blue field filled with simple geometrical motifs which are derived from plant patterns and are linked by straight, stem-like lines echoing the plant theme. The meandering main border on a white ground is in the same vein. The colours in these village rugs were usually dyed by the weaver herself using plants that she was able to gather locally and according to traditional dye recipes handed down from her mother. The weaving was part of her daily chores and had to fit in with her other tasks. Weaving in the house also enabled her to pass the techniques and the patterns on to her daughter(s).

Hamadan rugs have always been very popular as furnishing rugs in Europe. They are durable and often very sensibly priced.
