Description

This pair of Italian voided velvet panels dates to the late 17th or early 18th century and was most likely made in Genoa.

The blue voided silk velvet on these pilaster hangings stands out from the golden silk satin “background”, with the high-low effect giving it added texture.

The design is a repeating meander of flowers and foliage symmetrically arranged along a central vertical axis. The proportions of the design and the width of the panels, 57 centimetres from selvedge to selvedge, would suggest that this fabric was intended for use as a wall hanging or as furnishing fabric, albeit of the richest kind, since the use of silk as well as the skill and time going into the weaving of the textiles made them very valuable indeed. The panels still convey a sense of superb elegance, despite the slight damage to the plain ground.
