Description

This Genoese silk velvet panel dates to around 1700, or possibly the late 17th century.

It is a composite panel made up of a number of pieces of voided silk velvet depicting flowers and leaves.

This type of fabric would have been used as wall hangings or possibly as luxurious furnishing material. Its original grandeur is still present.

A sample of the same fabric is in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, published in Dilys E. Blum, The Fine Art of Textiles. The Collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. 1997, Plate 20, page 20.

The panel is damaged but has been conserved and backed with linen.
